Week 2: Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds are sold as hulled hemp seeds, with the outer shell removed. The whole seeds are indigestible.

Why they are so good:

  • Perfect protein source: contains all 20 amino acids, but also each of the 9 essential amino acids that our bodies cannot produce.
  • High in GLA: Gamma linoleic acid, an Omega 6 fatty acid that helps balance hormones
  • High in Omega 3 fatty acids, which help maintain a healthy heart.
  • Excellent source of fiber: it contains high levels of soluble and insoluble fiber to help cardiovascular and intestinal health.

Like most seeds and nuts, hemp seeds are high in fat. 2 tablespoons is about 90 calories.

Taste test: a little sour, a little nutty.

How to include in your diet: try as a sprinkle on salads (gives a crunch), blend with a smoothie, ground up add to muffin, bread or pancake mix.
